You can go in and edit the vertical curve tables to move PI's to even stations, adjust lengths, etc. Wherever you move the mouse, the design line curves and bends between your drag point and the two ends, all the while maintaining all of the design criteria you selected! Once you have accepted the vertical curve, you can select the out-going tangent and repeat the process until all the vertical curves are done. Once you have selected your design criteria, you can go back to your profile window, click on any part of your straight design line and move it about (for instance, to match the existing ground).

When you have made these selections, you are shown speed tables, K values and stopping distance criteria with a range of values that match your specs. You can select terrain type from level to rolling to hilly. You can select roads as Urban, Rural or Interstate or major artery, major collector, or minor collector. You can then view tables to see the relationships. You can set the design speed, K value, and/or absolute stopping distance through a dialog box. After you have created an existing ground profile across your DTM, you begin the design profile by drawing a straight line between the beginning of the profile and its end. It is hard to describe in print, or even with still photographs, but I will go into some detail to try to describe one function, the profile design. How can we make it easier and more efficient?

TERRAMODEL for Windows is all new, and all TERRAMODEL. They still have a fault-tolerant DXF reader that reads R13 DXF files. I would read them into TERRAMODEL, write them out to DXF, and then read them into AutoCAD. Engineers used to send me DXF files that AutoCAD could not read. The DXF reader and writer was a real boon. This served as the backbone of the Road Design program for TERRAMODEL in DOS, and gave them a powerful road design program. Although the collection of commands was very powerful, putting them together into useful design functions was not at all intuitive. Some of the innovations were automatically updating the line labeling text and position when lines are moved or edited, and a wonderful DXF reader and writer.ĭata General had a very powerful set of commands for road design which they marketed for their Avion workstation.

While the competition grew rapidly, Plus 3 made slow, steady growth, concentrating on things like finding easier and better ways of performing each task, automating as much of the process as possible, and providing free, unlimited toll free telephone support. Marketing seems to have been the slow point. Halo, nevertheless had limited magnification. It also made the files many, many times more compact. Then there was the fact that the graphics engine allowed more compact point storage and point manipulation, making it hundreds of times faster than the competition. This strategy allowed both the instant generation of a contour map for the beginner and the complete customization of the process by the more experienced user. This was possible by the use of default files that controlled the generation of the DTM, the selection of layers for the contours, the contour interval, the labeling interval, etc. There were several reasons for this strength.įirst, Plus 3 concentrated on making as much of the process automatic as was possible, including automatically reading in the fault lines or break lines and generating the DTM transparently as part of the contouring command. It had the strongest Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and contouring package on the market at any price of the programs I had reviewed. It was the most innovative program of the time. It seems as though someone already had the name Terracad so the name was changed to TERRAMODEL.

It has been very interesting to watch the development over the years. I first reviewed TERRAMODEL when it was called Terracad back in the 1980s.
